Totoro Squishy

Ohayōgozaimasu my little ones! Today I am going to be talking about one of my favourite toys: Kawaii Squishes!

I love everything about them. Kawaii Squishies are fun, very helpful, easy to play, so satisfying and very, very cute. I want to talk about what they are, where they come from, what they are for and show you some of my personal favourites!

What Exactly Are Kawaii Squishies?

Kawaii Squishies (literally cute squishies) are very soft stress relieving toys, very similar to the classic stress-relieving ball. You can squeeze them hard when feeling anxious, stressed, overwhelmed or sad, and they will always go back to their original shape like nothing happened!

Squishies can be separated into a few different categories such as:

  • Animal Squishies;
  • Food and Dessert Squishies;
  • Funny Squishies (emojis, memes, poop);
  • Character Squishies;
  • Unicorn Squishies.

Inside all these categories, you can find many sizes from tiny to jumbo, with some fitting at the palm of your hand, and some as big as your head. Squishies can also be scented, sometimes matching their shape and occasionally playing with it, like a strawberry scented as milk, for example.

All Kinds of fun and kawaii Squishies!

Where Do Kawaii Squishies Come From?

You may have guessed it already: Japan. Like all things kawaii, Kawaii Squishes originated in Tokyo about 40 years ago.

The plan was to create a cuter stress relief ball to help with their stressful work routine, and could anything be better than a kawaii and functional stress relief toy?

The history of kawaii things in Japan goes all the way back to the 17th century with something called Netsuke.

Netsuke were tiny sculptures that were attached to kimonos for storing things since kimonos don’t have pockets. They started as purely utilitarian and evolved into very artistic, intricate and beautiful sculptures. Some conventional materials for making netsuke were ivory, hardwoods, metal, and porcelain.

Many different types of Netsuke from the Edo period. Look at the details!

After that, around the 1970s, the mechanical pencil was invented, allowing Japanese teenagers to use finer lines in their writing, which helped them develop cuter handwriting and emoji characters mixed in the kanji and sentences.

Very shortly after that, Hello Kitty and many kawaii characters were invented, and like I said in my last post, that changed the kawaii game for good.
Around the 1980s the kawaii squishies came, and everyone started using them as accessories, charms, key chains, and decorations. Nowadays it has become even more popular, with people now collecting them and using them for stress relief.

How Squishies Help Relieve Stress?

Like any stress relieving ball, the repetitive motion of squeezing a squishy will help with relieving stress, improving focus, quickening the reflexes and improving strength.

But the kawaii squishies have even more features and advantages than a regular stress relief ball. Because they are incredibly soft and take longer to come back to their shape, squeezing your squishy and watching it slowly shape itself again will make you feel a calming sensation, like watching your stress going away while the squishy expands back to its original shape.

And all that can be enhanced by adding matching scents to your shape of choice. Like a birthday cake squishy with the smell of a birthday cake, since the scent can increase the relaxation effect. Also, because of their varying sizes and styles, people can carry them in their purse and take them anywhere!

Playing with Squishies

Smoosh! Stretch! Squeeze! So Kawaii! *-*

What Are Squishies Made Of?

Squishies are usually made of polyurethane foam (PU), which is found in memory foams, kitchen sponges and cushions. They can also be made of silicone, especially the ones used for attachments in phone cases and the such.

Please be aware that PU is a toxic material and should never be consumed, so don’t let squishies made of polyurethane next to your toddlers or pets, okay?

How To Take Care Of Your Squishy?

First of all, don’t heat it or put it in hot water. That will only break it down and if it is made of PU, it can even release some toxins, and things could go pretty bad.

The best and easiest way to clean it is to wipe it down with soap and hot water. You can then use a towel or let it air dry. Simple as that!

    Hello Gibran! Speaking from personal experience, the squishies actually help a lot. I have used mine many times to cope with anxiety and stress from work and the such. It’s very relaxing and most times you don’t even notice you are squishing them after a while, it becomes almost a reflex. I highly recommend getting one 🙂

Omg that Totoro bag full of squishies is adorable! Are there any Studio Ghibli squishies available? Even if not, that carrying case full of squishies would be enough. Thank you for the history on these cute stress relievers.

    I LOVE Totoro so much!! Unfortunately, I couldn’t find any good squishies from Studio Ghibli. To be honest, I have found a Pink Totoro one but he is actually quite ugly 🙁 Very poor details and an extremely unsettling face. But in this Totoro bag bundle, there is a little pastel pink Totoro! I know it’s not much but he is very cute and sweet. You can see him at the far right corner, on the top. If I ever find a good Ghibli squishy I’ll be sure to post it here!
    Thank you so much for stopping by! Have a wonderful week 😀
